Teso North Sub-county Youth League has organised a three-day sports camp at Koruruma Primary School to engage youths over the long holiday as one way to mitigate teenage pregnancies and drug abuse in the area.
The tournament, which was organised by Fred Obuchi, aims at sensitising the youth to shun practices which promote immorality and sexual abuse, which have been rampant in recent days.
“The reason why we organised this tournament was to engage youths who are idle so they don’t indulge in practices which are likely to promote teenage pregnancies and drug abuse,” said Obuchi.
“Beside nurturing talents here at grassroots, we are also giving guidance and counselling and career guidance for most youths who remain hopeless after Form-four,” he added.
Obuchi urged other leaders to support huge talent in the region, which has been left untapped.
“Apparently Teso has great talent, which is unnoticed. That is why I am calling upon leaders to join hands and support the promotion of these talents,” he said.
The sentiments were echoed by Benard Etyang, a FIFA coach who graced the occasion.
Etyang urged youths to embrace sports with discipline and seriousness; it deserves noting that sports pay handsomely.
“Sports pays handsomely if you are patient and disciplined,” said Etyang.
In the opening match, home team Young Boys United thrashed Akapiyani FC 3-0. Cornal Baraza and Shadrack Osamong netted the goals for the home team.
