Young professionals call for friendlier Finance Bill

The Young Professionals Kenya (YPK) has advocated for the total scrapping of the contentious Finance Bill and the development of a new bill which considers the plight of all Kenyans.

YPK President Ms. Maryben Omollo said they acknowledge the importance of taxation for National Development but maintain that there should be a balance between taxation and people’s wellbeing.

“We support the call to have people pay taxes; however, the current bill imposes disproportionate burdens on young professionals and emerging businesses,” Ms. Omollo claimed.

Speaking in Nairobi on Monday during a press briefing on the ongoing debate over the finance bill, Ms. Omollo stressed that the bill will have negative impacts, such as increasing the tax burden on young professionals and digital entrepreneurs by reducing their net income and potentially stifling innovation.

She stated that they are not a political party nor are they politically affiliated with any political faction, saying that they are voicing their opinion over the bill, which she claimed seeks to impose heavy taxes and levies on Kenyans.

She challenged senior government officials to reduce their lavish spending and use taxpayers’ money transparently and efficiently for the benefit of the nation.
