World Bank, the State Department of Housing and Urban Development and the Bungoma County Government are collaborating in efforts to improve the livelihoods of residents in informal settlements.
Bungoma Deputy Governor Jennifer Mbatiany speaking Thursday at her office in Bungoma County lauded the transformative work being undertaken by Kenya Informal Settlement Improvement Project (KISIP).
Mbatiany noted that KISIP intervention in Bungoma County was a crucial step towards addressing the challenges faced by informal settlements, promoting social inclusion, and contributing to the national agenda of improving urban areas across Kenya.
The Deputy Governor noted that KISIP has been instrumental in enhancing informal settlements across Kenya, with Bungoma County being a key beneficiary.
Mbatiany further indicated that under the initiative, two settlements, Landi Matope in Chwele and Mjini in Bungoma Town were undergoing significant development upgrades.
She said that the development included improved road networks, enhanced water supply, and installation of street and floodlights, and drainage repairs.
“These efforts are aimed at addressing issues on inadequate infrastructure and security ultimately elevating the quality of life for local residents,” she noted
Mbatiany said that Bungoma County was set to benefit from further projects focusing on tenure regularization, infrastructure upgrading, and the formulation of a County Slum Upgrading and Prevention Strategy.
