Woman in hospital following attack by Hyena in Kajiado

A mother of three is nursing serious injuries at the Kajiado County Referral hospital after she was mauled by a marauding hyena, at Osewan area of Kaputiei North ward in Kajiado.

The victim identified as Anna Meeli, aged 35, was attacked by the hyena at around 7am while on an errand to the neighbours’ home to collect milk.

One of her relatives, Mooke Ole Sakuda told KNA that Anna had earlier been escorted by her husband to the home where he left her and proceeded to his place of work adding that the hyena stalked her near the water point as she was heading home after picking the milk.

“Following the attack, Anna sustained serious injuries on her hands, head and buttocks. She is now fighting for her life at the Kajiado County Referral Hospital where she was rushed after the Sunday morning incident,” said Ole Sakuda.

Irate residents swung into action and killed the hyena on the spot after a distress call by eyewitnesses.

While confirming the incident, Osewan’s assistant chief Ezekiel Samitei urged the Kenya Wildlife Service to relocate the hyenas whom they believe have strayed from the Nairobi National Park.

“The wandering hyenas are a danger to our school going children who have to trek to and from school every morning and evening as the hyenas hide in the bushes. We can’t also go about our businesses at peace as we don’t know when they will strike. We are urging KWS to relocate them for our safety,” said the Assistant Chief.

Kenya Wildlife Service, Kajiado Assistant Director, Francis Mbaka decried the incident as unfortunate and reiterated that the victim will be compensated after the family lodges the claim and the County Wildlife Conservation and Compensation Committee validates and approves the matter.
