Pasture and trees were destroyed yesterday when a fire broke out in Majengo area in Marsabit Central Sub-County with wananchi being asked to observe the fire season alert.
Quick intervention by the police who teamed up with members of the public managed to contain the fire before it could spread to homesteads and offices located in the area.
Area Deputy County commissioner Patrick Muriira said the fire which consumed about ten acres of pasture and acacia trees started as a resident burnt refuse in her compound.
Mr Muriira said that the fire was fanned by strong winds and thanked residents for their quick response.
The DCC reminded wananchi that the fire alert season had set in and called for caution in order to avoid recurrence of such incidents.
He asked chiefs to enlighten residents on the importance of observing the fire alert season whenever issued by the Kenya forest service department.
Those who responded used tree branches and soil to put off the fire which had caused panic among locals.
