Widows in Kakamega get support to form small companies

The Kakamega County Widows Empowerment Project (KCWEP)is supporting widows to form small companies that will enable them apply for tenders to supply goods and services to improve their lives.

KCWEP Director Mwanzi Jerry asked the county government to consider the widows while awarding some of the tenders once those companies are formed and certificates made available for consideration.

He asked the widows to take advantage of the available empowerment opportunities that the organization is providing to be self-sufficient and take care of their families.

He was speaking during the International Widows Day that was marked at Malaha Isongo Ward in Kakamega County and graced by Kakamega Governor’s Wife Professor Janet Kasili Barasa.

During the celebrations, KCWEP launched a sorghum farming project targeting widows that will be implemented in partnership with USAID Yali.

The Governor’s spouse urged widows to always speak out whenever they are oppressed in the society in order to get help and support.

She said the county government will support them to be strong and be able to sustain themselves instead of being hopeless and resort to begging.

“We know that women are the pillars of a family. And the community depends on a woman for many things about life. So, we want to support women to be strong in order to have a united community,” she added.
