Kiambu County Governor Dr. Kimani Wamatangi has launched a free cabro-making training programme for youth in Ruiru Sub-County to equip them with practical skills and combat unemployment.
The initiative was announced during the opening of the twin workshop at Ruiru Vocational Training Centre in Biashara Ward early this week.
Dr. Wamatangi emphasised that the programme will help young people gain essential skills to secure employment and improve their livelihoods.
Subsequently, a cabro-making shed has been constructed and is nearing completion. Once fully equipped, it will serve as a training hub, preparing youths for the job market.
“Our youths will earn a daily income once they acquire cabro-making skills, allowing them to support themselves and their families,” Dr. Wamatangi said.
The governor highlighted the growing demand for cabro blocks due to ongoing road construction projects in the county.
Training local youth will provide them with employment opportunities while contributing to infrastructural development. The programme is expected to create jobs for at least 300 young people.
Beyond training, Dr. Wamatangi assured participants they would receive cabro-making machines after completing the programme, encouraging them to start their own businesses.
“We want to ensure our young people do not return to unemployment. Instead, they should use the skills and equipment provided to become self-reliant,” he added.
Local leaders and residents welcomed the initiative as a strategic move to address youth unemployment and promote vocational training.
Biashara Ward MCA, Kimani Nduta, urged youth to embrace hard work and unity, pledging his support to help them become productive members of society.
The initiative aligns with Kiambu County’s broader efforts to promote technical and vocational education as a pathway to economic empowerment.
Meanwhile, as infrastructure projects expand, the need for skilled local labour grows, ensuring employment opportunities for trained youths.
