Wamatangi launches distribution of learning materials to ECDE learners

Kiambu Governor Paul Kimani Wamatangi has launched a program to distribute exercise books to all Early Childhood Development and Education (ECDE) centres in 15 sub-counties in Kiambu.

The kick-off event, held at the county government headquarters in Kiambu town, on Thursday, January 9, marks a significant milestone in the county’s efforts to enhance early childhood education.

“My administration has commissioned 109 ECDE centres, with an additional 130 centres set for completion and commissioning in February this year. We are committed to building complete ECDE centres rather than merely adding classrooms, said the Governor.

He further revealed plans to initiate the construction of the final 62 learning centres, to have all 301 ECDE centres fully operational by June 2025.

“By the close of the 2025-2026 financial year, we will have completed all 524 ECDE centres in the county,” Wamatangi affirmed.

Funding of ECDE programs is a devolved function of county governments as outlined in the Constitution. He commended his administration for its remarkable achievements in advancing ECDE programs and reaffirmed his commitment to maintaining high standards of early childhood education in Kiambu.

Regarding teacher training, Wamatangi disclosed that starting February 2025, the county government in partnership with the Kenya Institute of Curriculum Development will fund training for ECDE teachers to undergo further training in diploma courses offered at colleges and universities within the county.

The event was attended by Kiambu Deputy Governor Rosemary Kirika, Members of the County Assembly (MCAs), Speaker of the County Assembly Charles Thiong’o, County Executive Committee Member (CECM) for Education, Gender, Culture, and Social Services, Nancy Gichung’wa, and Chief Officer in charge of ECDE and Culture Dr. Mercy Njagi.
