Wajir kicks off polio immunization drive

The Wajir County Government, in collaboration with the national government and international health partners, has launched a five-day polio immunization campaign in an effort to prevent the spread of the disease.

Speaking during launching of the initiative, the county executive for health, Habiba Ali said that the immunization drive targets over 186,000 children under five years of age in Wajir County and other high-risk regions including Marsabit, Garissa, and Mandera.

Habiba said the campaign follows reports of a polio outbreak in neighboring country of Ethiopia, raising concerns about cross-border transmission.

She lauded efforts by other development partners, health workers and community volunteers for their unwavering commitment in the fight against polio.

“This initiative aligns with Kenya’s national strategy to eradicate polio, emphasizing the continued need for vaccination campaigns to safeguard public health,” Habiba said.

Health officials have urged parents and caregivers to ensure that all eligible children receive the oral polio vaccine during this critical period.

The county chief officer for Health Dr. Hassan Abdi, emphasized the importance of vaccination, stating, “Polio remains a serious threat, and this campaign is crucial in protecting our children. We urge parents to support this initiative and allow their children to be vaccinated.”

He said that local leaders, community elders, and religious institutions have also rallied behind the campaign, mobilizing residents to participate fully.

Dr. Hassan said that WHO and UNICEF have played a key role by providing vaccines, technical support, and logistical assistance to ensure the immunization effort reaches every household.

The Wajir County Department of Health has expressed gratitude to all stakeholders for their commitment in eradicating polio and strengthening public health.

The local health officials reiterated their dedication to routine immunization programs to sustain immunity and prevent future outbreaks.

Meanwhile, with polio posing a serious risk to young children, this campaign highlights the significance of vaccination in safeguarding public health and moving closer to a polio-free Kenya.
