Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has distributed assorted sports kits to 33 sports teams as a way of empowering the county’s youth.
The kits that included uniforms, footballs, boots and volleyballs, and nets were given to selected football and volleyball teams from Njukiini and Gathigiriri wards to boost their capacity and increase their competitiveness in sports.
While issuing the uniforms, the governor said that her administration is committed to empowering the county’s youth through sports talent development among other empowerment programmes.
She said that over 300 clubs in the county have benefited from various sports equipment and uniform since her administration took office, which have contributed to the success of many of the benefiting teams during various competitions.
She noted that as a result of the support, some clubs have produced players who have been selected to join the Kenya Super League and the Premier Leagues while others have won scholarships to technical training institutes.
Waiguru stressed on the importance of sporting activities among the young people as a way of keeping themselves healthy especially during this corona period and also engaging them constructively so as to prevent them from falling prey to drug abuse and other criminal activities.
