The US Agency for International Development (USAID), Kenya, has invested over sh.291 million to increase resilience and economic growth among the pastoralist communities in Northern Kenya.
The agency Deputy Administrator (DA), Ms. Bonnie Glick said the program which covers five counties increases adaptability by reducing risk and improving social economic conditions, while targeting causes of vulnerability.
Speaking while inspecting various development projects funded by the USAID in Isiolo County, Glick said over 700,000 people from pastoral areas were supported in building their assets to increase ability to withstand chronic shocks and stress.
The DA was accompanied by Isiolo governor, Dr. Mohamed Kuti and his Deputy, Dr. Abdi Issa in touring some of the USAID supported projects in the area.
She said over 500,000 people were empowered through community development action and leverage for public and private resources for education, health, markets, infrastructure and other services.
Glick added that more resources were advanced into the region served with emergency nutrition support by development partners.
Speaking at Kakili irrigation farm in Burat location Dr. Kuti said that USAID had done a lot to reduce poverty especially in health, education and livestock sector, noting that their efforts in poverty reduction were being felt by locals.
Dr. Kuti said that his administration was appreciative of humanitarian assistance given by USAID over the years and urged the agency to help them once more during the current looming drought.
