Ugandan officers released after interrogation

Five Ugandan police officers who were intercepted at Korinda road block Saturday night have been dispatched to their homes after interrogation by Busia Security team.
The officers who spent the better part of the night at Busia police station were released at around 1.00pm.
Addressing the press at Busia police station, Busia County Police Commander John Nyoike said the officers were pursuing a vehicle with unknown goods from the neighboring country of Uganda.
“They gained entry into our country not knowing because the border is not marked, when they reached the barrier in Busia, they were intercepted by police officers,” he said.
Nyoike added that the driver of the lorry decided to jump out of the lorry after seeing the barrier and disappeared.
“Our officers searched the vehicle but they did not establish what it was carrying because it was locked,” he said adding that officers from the Ugandan side and the vehicle were escorted to Busia police station.
He further said that the content of the lorry which is currently detained by police is yet to be established by officers.
“We have asked prison officers to assist us because the load is too big,” he said adding that so far it has been established that the lorry was carrying scrap metal from Uganda which were destined to Kampala.
The official further said that police officers are yet to establish the reason why the cargo did not get entry into Kampala but instead came back to Kenya through Busia border.
“It is the first time I have encountered such an incident and we have good working relationship with our Ugandan counterparts,” he said adding that any challenges are normally addressed by the cross border committee.
