Uasin Gishu County is set to host world athletic tour gold event in Africa, named after the late Agnes Tirop in February 2022.
Speaking during a courtesy call in Uasin Gishu, Athletics Kenya (AK) officials lead by Mr. Paul Mutwii, said it will be a great opportunity yet again for Eldoret and Kenya at large after successfully holding Eldoret City Marathon.
Mutwii said that the event would provide another platform that would expose Kenyan athletes to the world.
“The events will be named after the late Agnes Tirop and Uasin Gishu County will be privileged to host the world athletics tour, the event which will be the first of its kind in Africa since it has not been held before in the continent,” said Mutwii.
“As athletic Kenya we sat down and thought Eldoret to be the best place to host the event because of the huge support base the county offers to athletes. As to why Kenya was picked, it was because of the consistent outstanding performance in the past world cross country event,” added Mutwii.
Uasin Gishu Governor, Jackson Mandago, said the County is privileged to host the athletic and assured athletic Kenya of the County support.
The Governor expressed optimism that the event would be a success as many other championships in the past, adding that it is an opportunity for fans to also enjoy the event. Mandago noted that the occasion will also showcase talents from the County and surrounding counties after a long period break due to corona pandemic.
The partnership is between Athletics Kenya and GOLAZO Kenya that specializes in athletes’ management.
