Uasin Gishu County disburses Sh95 million bursary to 13,450 needy students

Uasin Gishu county government has disbursed bursary cheques worth Sh95 million to needy students this financial year.
The bursary fund will benefit 13,450 students in secondary schools and tertiary institutions across the County.
The beneficiaries were selected through public participation and vetting exercises in all the 30 wards, early2019.
Speaking during the presentation of the cheques at the county headquarters, area governor Jackson Mandago said the bursary will run parallel with other kitties from the county assembly and the national government.
“We are sponsoring youth in medical colleges, polytechnics, technical training institutes and agricultural training institutes,” he said.
Mandago said the gesture was a very clear indication of his government’s commitment to prioritize education for economic transformation and improved livelihoods for the people.
The governor advised bursary committees to award reasonable funds to the students saying it is better for a few students to benefit rather than having so many beneficiaries who will be given as low as Sh3000 that is not even enough for a term’s fee.
“We have seen cases of students who benefited from bursaries being sent back home before the term ends because the funds were spread so thinly,” he said.
“It is unrealistic for the bursary committee to award a total orphan Sh3000 bursary for secondary school fees because such a child cannot afford to get any other money to clear the school fees balance,” Mandago observed.
