A two-year-old boy has drowned after he fell in a farm water pan at Matuiku village in Laikipia West Sub County on Monday.
The child is said to have been playing near the family-owned water pan with his siblings and accidentally slipped, fell in, and drowned, as he could not swim.
The Laikipia County Police Commander (CPC), Maxwell Nyaema while confirming the incident on Tuesday said that Christopher Muita died while his mother and other villagers tried to resuscitate him after rescuing him from the water body that was full due to the ongoing rains pounding the region.
“We received a report that a child had drowned in Matuiku area at midday. Police officers from Ng’arua station visited the scene and found that he had already died,” Nyaema said.
Nyaema added that the deceased was playing with other children from the locality outside their home few metres from the water pan while the mother identified as Maureen Wambui was working at a nearby farm.
“Upon arrival our officers found the body of the victim in the house where the villagers rushed him in order to resuscitate him but to no avail,” Nyaema added.
The CPC urged parents to be cautious against letting their children play near water bodies to avert similar occurrences, calling for the fencing of the water pans.
The body was taken by the police officers to Nyahururu County Referral mortuary awaiting postmortem.
