Two minors have been rescued from early marriages in Kajiado County.
The two girls who had been married off for seven months ran away from their matrimonial homes to the Mashuuru Children’s Office where they were rescued and moved to a children’s home.
The men who had married the girls managed to escape a police dragnet and are being sought after but their parents Karawuo Nambayia and Malee Nyausi from Maparasha in Kajiado county are being held at the Kajiado Police Station pending investigations.
Kajiado Central Sub-County Officer Margaret Sanderi said the two girls aged 14, and 15 had been married off by their parents who claimed that they were over eighteen years old but according to Birth records, the girls were still minors.
“We rescued two girls aged 14 and 15years old who had been married off by their parents. The girls managed to escape their matrimonial homes and ran to our offices in Mashuuru for help,” she said.
Cases of early marriages in Kajiado County have gone down but in the interior areas most girls do not go to school and still undergo Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) before getting married off at a tender age.
The Children’s office is working with Feed The Child and World Vision to help more girls go to school.
