Police in Kisii are investigating an incident in which two men in the company of ten minors were arrested on suspicion of child trafficking at a hotel in Kisii town.
Speaking to the press Friday, Kisii County Police Commander Charles Kases said they received a report that the children aged between 7 to 10 years were being accommodated in a nearby hotel by two men.
Kases said the two claimed that the minors from Marsabit had secured a scholarship at Eberege SDA church in Kenyenya Sub County and they were facilitating the process.
The Police Commander noted they have been in contact with some leaders from Marsabit regarding the same and it was evident that the right procedure for moving the children was not followed.
“We are working with the children’s department to ensure the safety of the children, including taking them for medical examination,” he said.
According to Teresa Bonareri, a cleaner at Zonic Hotel, the two men, who are regular customers at the hotel, checked into the facility on Wednesday and the minors joined them the following day at night.
Speaking on the phone, however, South East Kenya Field President, Pastor James Ondabu said the SDA church was not aware of the sponsorship program and discouraged the use of the church’s name for untrustworthy activities.
