Two suspects arrested over hate leaflets in Eldoret

Police in Eldoret have arrested two suspects in connection with the recent circulation of hate leaflets warning certain communities of eviction within the Kipkaren estate in Kapseret constituency.

Uasin Gishu County Commissioner Steven Kihara said more arrests would be made as security agencies intensify investigations.

Speaking at ACK church Malel during a security meeting on Tuesday, the County Commissioner assured the residents that the government will address land-related challenges at Kipkaren to ensure peace prevails.

He also said that the sub-county peace committee has been revived and would work closely with elders and members of the community to address such matters ahead of 2022 general elections.

The elders led by Alex Mursi, Kamunu Wa Kabari, and retired major John Seii urged communities to coexist peacefully while appealing to the government to address the issue of land grabbing that has continued to be a source of conflict.

Uasin Gishu leaders led by Governor Jackson Mandago have decried police laxity though assuring residents to go on with their activities saying a repeat of 2007/8 will not be witnessed.

On Monday leaders from the county condemned the circulation of the leaflets accusing ‘some few’ disgruntled elements of attempting to fan ethnic animosity in the county that bore the brunt of the 2007/2008 post-election violence and called on security agencies to promptly investigate and bring the culprits to book.

Governor Mandago who led the leaders said those behind the circulation of the leaflets calling on some communities to leave Kipkaren estates should be arrested and arraigned in court to serve as a warning to other individuals harbouring similar intentions.
