Two men drowned in separate incidents in the waters of Lake Victoria over the weekend.
In the first incident, Calvince Otieno, 25, drowned while on a fishing expedition near Lela Beach, Homa Bay Sub-County.
Otieno who is a resident of Ndhiwa Sub-County had gone to visit his uncle in Homa Bay Sub-County when tragedy struck.
Witnesses said Otieno left yesterday for a fishing expedition near Lela Beach alongside other fishermen and upon entering the lake a few kilometers from the shore, he suffered dizziness and slipped from the boat into the water.
Homa Bay Township Location Senior Chief Joshua Ochogo, said the fishermen tried to rescue him but failed as he sank immediately.
“It seems he had health problems which made him uncomfortable with the boat before he fell in to the water,” Ochogo said. His body was moved to Homa Bay County Referral mortuary.
In the second incident, a fisherman identified as Justus Ouma drowned in Lake Victoria near Ringiti Island in Mbita Sub-County on Sunday also while on a fishing expedition with colleagues.
According to the treasurer of Ringiti Beach Management Unit Dan Sure, Ouma drowned because of strong winds which rocked their boat. “They had just cast their nets but they hit a storm causing imbalance of the boat before he fell into the water,” Sure said.
The search for his body is ongoing with relatives appealing for government’s support in the mission.
