Two people died while nine others sustained serious injuries when three vehicles were involved in an accident near Texas Petrol Station, along the Narok-Bomet Highway.
Confirming the incident, Narok North Police Commandant Frederick Siundu said the accident occurred when a Toyota Mark 10 vehicle traveling from the Bomet direction was trying to overtake a canter lorry on a continuous yellow line.
Unfortunately, the Mark 10 vehicle with three people on board collided head on with a Matatu Hiace vehicle belonging to Galaxy Shuttle that was traveling from Narok town, killing the driver of the Mark 10 on the spot.
Another person who was traveling in the Mark 10 vehicle succumbed to injuries at Narok County Referral Hospital where he had been rushed for treatment.
“The accident was caused by carelessness of the deceased driver because the road was marked a yellow continuous road, meaning drivers are not supposed to overtake on that point,” said Siundu.
Eight passengers who were travelling in the Matatu vehicle and the other passenger in the Mark 10 vehicle are recuperating at the Narok County Referral Hospital.
“It is clear that the driver was unable to control the vehicle because it was moving at a high speed. The two deceased are young men aged below 35 years-old who could not have died if they were vigilant on the road,” he said.
The police boss cautioned drivers to be very vigilant while using the road especially during this season of heavy rains to avoid causing careless accidents.
He reiterated that the traffic department will be very vigilant to seize drivers who will not follow traffic rules so as to curb rampant accidents.
The bodies of the deceased were moved to the Narok County Referral Hospital for preservation awaiting postmortem as the vehicle wreckage was towed to the Narok Town Police Station.
