Two 6- year- old cousins drowned in a water pan in Laisamis constituency, Marsabit County last evening leaving residents in shock.
Marsabit county police commander Ambrose Steve Oloo said the tragedy occurred at around 4 pm as the girls played in the pool of water at Sakargara village seemingly oblivious of the danger they were exposing themselves to.
The water pan was constructed by a road construction company that built Merille-Marsabit section of the Isiolo-Moyale highway and handed over to the local community.
The water facility that villagers welcomed with open hands as a corporate social responsibility from the international contractor has thrown the villagers into grief.
“It is unfortunate that the two innocent girls died in the water pan in which they played,” he said.
Mr Oloo called on parents to take extra caution on the safety of their children especially during this time that the country is experiencing heavy rains while the children are on long school holiday.
