Two bodies recovered from boat tragedy scene

Police from Madogo police station, Tana River County this morning recovered two bodies from the scene of last month’s boat tragedy that claimed seven lives.

Talking to KNA on phone, Bangale sub-county deputy commissioner Joseph Kipkorir said that the decomposed bodies could be part of those who drowned on April 28th.

The bodies bring to nine the number of people who have drowned since two sections of the Garissa – Madogo road were washed away.

“The two bodies were found floating by members of the public who immediately informed the police. We suspect the two were part of the persons still missing from the boat tragedy,” Kipkorir said.

According to the DCC, security agencies are still combing the scene of the boat tragedy in search of more bodies, ” he noted.

It’s alleged that the ill-fated boat had over 40 passengers on board. At least 23 were rescued and over 10 could still be missing.

Madogo MCA Juma Ali however differed with the administrator alleging that the duo drowned while trying to cross the flooded Kona punda section of the road.

“From my observation, the deceased drowned two days ago. It seems one went in to assist the other but unfortunately, they both drowned,” Juma said.

“We found an ID from one of deceased indicating one of them is from Mbooni. Sh1300 were recovered from his pockets. I don’t understand why he did not use the money to pay for a boat that is charging Sh300,” he added.

A resident who requested anonymity claimed that the two were trying to wade through the floods when they drowned.
