TVET to review curriculum for its institutions

The Curriculum for the Technical and Vocational Education Training Institutions is set to change as the institutions will now be training for three months in some skills and certifying a student.

Technical and Vocational Education Training PS Dr. Esther Muoria explained that  the curricula  would be broken into microparts, as per proposal, of which it would be thoroughly scrutinized in a consultative meeting to be held soon with TVET Principals.

“I have invited TVET Principals to Nyeri National Polytechnic; I am going to sit with them and we are going to reach a consensus on the way forward,” she said.

The PS noted that the students can now, after the three months, go to the world of jobs with a certificate and can still continue for six months to get another certificate.

The PS was speaking during the 1st Graduation Ceremony at Mawego National Polytechnic, Homa Bay County.

Muoria said the government was partnering with the industrial sector to have the students absorbed, some of whom she said were already into the institutions to demonstrate that it is possible to have well-crafted young people within the shortest time possible.

The PS said according to the Presidential Directive, it’s not tenable to keep young people for one year doing tailoring.

However, the PS said there are ongoing reforms in the TVET sector, aimed at ensuring there is equity, access and relevance in technical training.

She said the government is committed to its agenda of ensuring that every constituency has a TVET institution, to enable youth to access skills training, saying more than 80 percent of the constituencies have operational TVETs

“Plans are underway to ensure that every constituency has a well-equipped TVET institution,” the PS said, adding that nobody with skills will go hungry.

Muoria said the government has been keen to ensure the skills provided at the TVET sub-sector are consistent with the current global market needs, asking the TVET Principals to put their best foot forward to ensure that the young people have the requisite skills needed by the country to grow.

The graduation saw 1,980 students graduate with various certificates

“Today marks not just the completion of your training but the beginning of your journey as a skilled professional, ready to shape the future of Kenya and the world at large,” the PS told the graduands, as she congratulated them for the milestone, which she described was through hard work, dedication, and teamwork.
