Households affected by Drought at the Township Ward in Turkana Central have received relief food from the County Government to help them sustain their families during this time when drought effects are being felt across all the sub counties in Turkana.
The food items which included 2,244 sacks of maize, 449 sacks of beans and 421 cartons of cooking oil each containing 20 litres, is part of the 2,500 metric tonnes of food targeting about 640,000 affected households from Todonyang in Turkana North to Kalokol and Kangatotha wards in Turkana Central and going down to Kalapata in Turkana South.
The relief food is one of the County Government’s interventions to cushion vulnerable households from the biting effects of drought.
The County Relief intervention in the ward level is overseen by Ward Administrators who ensure the food reaches out to the affected households especially the vulnerable groups like the elderly, the People Living with Disabilities (PWDs) and those under HIV/AIDS treatment.
Turkana County Governor, Josphat Nanok announced that the County is in an alarm stage of drought and his administration was looking forward to coming up with interventions to prevent the drought situation from deteriorating further.
