Tragedy as man drowns while swimming along Kilifi beaches

A 22-year-old man  drowned while swimming at Baobab beach area along Bofa road Monday in Kilifi County.

Efforts by fishermen to save the deceased proved fruitless after they arrived a minute too late on the scene and found him already dead.

It is alleged that the deceased went to the ocean to swim with others but he opted to remain behind as the others returned to their homes.

Confirming the incident, Kilifi County Police Commander Nelson Taliti who declined to reveal the name of the deceased until the next of kin have been informed said it was around 6pm when the incident occurred.

He said most of the fishermen had ventured further into the deep sea for fishing and could not be immediately summoned to come in and rescue the victim who was all alone after others had left.

“We urge those Kilifi residents in Mtwapa, Kilifi and Malindi who go to the beaches for swimming expeditions to be in groups and move out together after swimming to avoid such unfortunate incidences. This is the second incident in two weeks when a similar one occurred along Old Ferry area where we lost a fisherman”, he said.

Taliti said the body has been removed to Kilifi County referral hospital mortuary for post mortem examination and urged members of the public to go to the mortuary and identify the victim.
