Traders reap big from schools’ event

Traders in Narok town are reaping huge profits as the National Primary School athletics championships got underway in the county.

The national competition that kicked off on Monday and is expected to end on Tuesday has seen many visitors from other regions in the country, flocking the county.

Participants in the National Athletics meet are being hosted at William Ole Ntimama stadium days after the Rift Valley region competition was held in the same venue.

The competitions held in the busy town left traders especially the hoteliers, boda boda operators and hawkers smiling as they made a windfall in profits.

Joseph Sadera, a boda boda operator, said he made double the profit of his daily earnings following the increased number of customers.

Sadera thanked the organizers of the event for holding the National celebrations in the county and welcomed more sports teams to consider holding the competitions in the county.

“On normal days, I make a profit of between Sh400 to Sh600. However, in the days the competition was held here, I made over Sh1, 000 per day as profit,” he confessed.

Rose Moraa who hawks snacks and tea in the town confessed to have made a lot of profit as many people were flocking at the Ole Ntimama stadium to witness the sporting activity.

“We are happy with the organizers of this event. We have not seen a National Competition being held at this stadium in the past, but in this season we are lucky to host teams from the entire country,” she said.

Those selling groceries and vegetables were also big winners as the demand for their commodities was very high compared to other seasons.

A spot check by KNA in major hotels in town showed full bookings though the prices had not been increased. This is because the technical team that comprised education and sports stakeholders had camped in the town to oversee the event.

Similar events are expected in the county in the months of August when the Kenya Water Companies Sports Organization (KEWASCO) will be held in the county.
