Traders at Olmekenyu trading center in Narok South Sub County are counting losses after their shops were reduced to ashes by a fierce fire that broke out last night.
Narok County Police commander Riko Ngare confirmed that 30 structures that were made of timber and iron sheets were completely destroyed by the fire that started at 3.40 am.
The structures were mainly used as shops on the front side and dwelling houses on the rear side. Property of unknown value was destroyed.
The Kenya Red Cross Society officials and fire brigade officers from Narok County responded and helped put off the fire with the help of the locals at around 7.30 am.
The County police boss confirmed that the exact cause of the fire has not yet been established, adding that no fatalities or injuries were reported.
“A multi-agency team of Kenya Police Service, red cross and fire brigade officials are still on the ground to assess the situation,” he added.
The incident happened only a few days after another fire broke out at Aitong trading center in Narok West Sub County and consumed property of unknown value.
At the same time, Kenya Forest Service Rangers and those from the Kenya Wildlife Service are at the Maasai Mau Forest to put off a furious fire that broke a week ago.
Narok County Ecosystem Conservator Daniel Mkung’ confirmed that the fire had consumed over 1000 acres of forest land.
