Top-scoring students from Nyaikuro Secondary School in Nyamira County in the 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination results are eyeing to pursue coveted courses in engineering and health sciences.
Clifford Ogato and Mary Onkundi, both of whom scored A (minus), hope to be enrolled in Mechanical Engineering and Bachelor of Science in Nursing, respectively.
Speaking to the press, they said they were grateful to the almighty God for their remarkable performance and that they were optimistic that they will be enrolled in their dream careers once the Kenya Universities Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) portal opens this year.
Mary Onkundi said she appreciated the school administration, which gave her a lot of support despite her vulnerable economic background by ensuring that she was not sent home for school fees.
Onkundi equally lauded efforts from her teachers, who worked closely with her to ensure she and other candidates attained impressive performances worth celebrating.
Clifford Ogato said their Principal, Job Rasugu, though it was a mixed school, introduced a study system where boys and girls study separately, a move that saw most students concentrate in their studies and improve their performance.
Nyaikuro High School Principal, Mr. Rasugu, said the improved performance by the 232 candidates in the 2024 exams was largely attributed to hard work by both teachers and candidates and the availability of a conducive learning and teaching environment.
“Our improvement in performance has excited the entire school fraternity, and we are optimistic that we shall continue doing even better in the subsequent national exams,” he said.
The school registered 232 candidates in 2024, and 223 candidates managed to attain a C (plus) and above, a grade which qualifies them for direct entry to public universities.
