Three teachers killed as militia attacks Kamuthe in Garissa

The  Heavily armed suspected Al Shabaab militants on Sunday night ambushed Kamuthe Resource Centre in Fafi Sub-county about 50 kilometres from Garissa town and selectively killed three non-local male teachers.

The gunmen reportedly overran and torched Kamuthe Administration Police Post after outgunning the six security officers manning the camp, forcing them to flee into neighbouring thickets.

The  militants who took control of the local trading centre later rounded up all non-local public servants before parading them before a firing squad for execution.

They also injured one Joshua Mutua aged 30 years who suffered two gun shots in left lower leg, One child reportedly sustained a gunshot wound after a stray bullet hit him during the shootings.

The dead teachers were identified as :(1) Caleb Mutangia Mutua aged 28 years(2)Titus Sasieka Mushindi,29, (3) Samwel Mutua, 29.

The Garissa County Commissioner (CC), Meru Mwangi, confirmed that the bodies of the three male teachers were recovered at Kamuthe Resource Centre in what appeared to be cold blood killings.

Preliminary reports into the incident, however, indicated the militants spared the life of all the female public servants rounded up during the dawn raid but their whereabouts remained unclear amid claims that they might have been abducted.

Villagers at the scene claimed that the bodies of the slain male counterparts were found but they could not account for their female colleagues, as their whereabouts remained vague after the attack by the time we went to press.

However, a contingent of security personnel led by the County Commissioner was at the scene to track down on the attackers who also destroyed critical communication installations.

Villagers said unknown numbers of gunmen armed with explosives blew up the Safaricom mast before overrunning the local AP camp where they torched and vandalized the security installation in the wee hours of the morning.

Efforts to reach the CC were futile, as the militants had destroyed communication transmission equipment at the center.

Bodies of deceased teachers have been removed to the Garrisa Referral Hospital Mortuary awaiting postmortem. While a combined security multi- agency team is combing the area in hot pursuit of the attackers.
