Three killed in road accident

Three people died Tuesday morning and seven others seriously injured in a road accident involving a 14 -seater- matatu and a canter at Embugani area along the Nairobi- Mombasa high way in Makindu Sub County.
Makueni County Commissioner Maalim Mohammed said the accident occurred after the matatu belonging to Semeka Sacco lost control after a tyre burst and collided head on with the canter which was headed to Nairobi.
The driver of the canter and two passengers in the matatu are among the dead.
Mohammed said the injured suffered head injuries and limb fractures and were being treated at Makindu Level Four hospital.
‘‘One of them is critically injured and is in a coma,’’ said the CC.
He said the matatu was speeding when the accident occurred.
Bodies of the deceased have been taken to the hospital’s mortuary while the vehicles have been towed to Makindu police station pending investigations.
Mohammed lamented over laxity of traffic police officers along the highway and called on them to intensify crackdowns along major roads in the county to curb carnage.
‘‘The public should also come out and help the police by reporting careless drivers to avoid loss of lives,’’ said the CC.
He proposed that NTSA considers revoking driving licenses for drivers proved to have been careless after investigations.
