Three people died, while eight others were injured in an accident involving eleven vehicles on the Nakuru-Nyahururu Highway Thursday.
Police said the accident occurred after a heavy truck lost control at Dundori and rammed into the vehicles.
Parts of Ndunduri, Ngorika, Umoja and Wanyororo in Nakuru County experienced major power blackouts as the ill-fated trailer truck also smashed into High Voltage Power transmission lines along the highway.
The truck was transporting logs from Oljororok in neighbouring Nyandarua County when its breaks apparently failed. The area is also popular with roadside vendors who sell Irish potatoes and other farm products.
Bahati police boss Jecinter Mwarania said some of the extensively damaged vehicles were being repaired at a roadside garage, while others belonged to motorists who had stopped by to buy farm produce from women vendors.
The accident caused a heavy traffic snarl-up as police officers. Emergency personnel from Kenya power Company and Red Cross personnel cleared the debris from the road.
The injured were taken to Level 5 Teaching and Referral Hospital in Nakuru and Olkalau Hospital in Nyandarua while the three bodies were removed to the Nakuru County Mortuary.
Mwarania called on drivers to avoid speeding on this particular stretch.
Recently a Kenya Defense Forces truck lost control and overturned at the spot resulting in scores of soldiers sustaining injuries.
An eyewitness Mr Jimmy Wagakabu said the Kenya National Highway Authority recently erected signs stretch warning of the danger spot, but most of them had been vandalized.
Another Witness Moses Mburu called on the authorities to erect speed bumps in the area saying such incidents had been witnessed in the past.
He said residents had a difficult time removing the injured from the wreckages as live power lines dangled dangerously before they were disconnected.
He appealed to the Nakuru Governor Lee Kinyanjui to allocate an ambulance to the Ndunduri health centre to deal with such life threatening emergencies.
