Three Held Over Theft in Mbale Town

Three suspects linked to the theft of Sh.1.5million at a
supermarket in Vihiga during new year eve have been remanded at Mbale police station.

Vihiga County Criminal Investigations Officer (CCIO) Mr. Paul Mumo and
Vihiga Officer Commanding Police Division (OCPD) Mr. Justin Nyagah
told Kenya News Agency (KNA) security officers have arrested three
suspects in connection with the theft incident which occurred on Monday
night.

According to police records Sh. 1,531,011 was stolen from
Sailam Chain of Supermarkets which belongs to Mr. Yatin Patel.

OCPD Nyagah said Patel reported the theft incident the following day.

“This was after he noticed the safe box where he had deposited cash
had been broken into and cash totaling to Sh.1, 531,011 stolen,” said
Nyagah.

The stolen cash was proceeds from the previous day’s sales.

Police and investigations officers promptly visited the scene where
they immediately launched investigations into the matter which has
left residents of Mbale town in shock.

“CCTV footage for the night positively identified a Mr. Graham
Ichaminya, 23 years, leaving the room which houses the safe,”
said Mumo, adding the suspect works as a porter at the stores
department in the same premise.

The security officers arrested the suspect who led them to his house
near Mbale Boys High School before he was arrested together with a
woman identified as Nancy Amukowe, aged 32 who was found in the house.

“A thorough search led to the recovery of Sh.1, 211,000 that had been
stashed behind a television set in the suspect’s house,” added Mumo.

Mumo further confirmed the two suspects together with a watchman in
charge of the supermarket and who has been implicated in the matter
appeared before Vihiga law court on Wednesday.

“The court ordered the trio to be remanded at Mbale police station as
crucial leads are followed toward recovery of the remaining cash
together and a mobile phone used for Mpesa services by the
proprietor,” he added.
