Three police officers are feared dead while three others are reported to have suffered serious injuries following Friday morning attack at Darkale Banisa Sub-county in Mandera.
Speaking to KNA on phone, Banisa Deputy County Commissioner Peter Lotulia, confirmed the incident saying a police patrol vehicle run over an Improvised Explosive Devise (IED) that had been set by the attackers.
“The attack happened in Darkale area of Banisa Sub-county at around 6am in the morning, our officers in three police land cruisers were on a normal patrol in the area when one of the car carrying eight officers ran over an IED, ” said Lotulia.
“We believe the IED was planted by Al-Shabaab militia in a retaliation mission after one of them was killed and several others injured by our Special Forces officers last week,” he added.
The deputy county commissioner urged the residents to report any suspicious person in their midst to assist police trace the attackers.
“The residents here are so economical with the truth, we request them to share any vital information with us because our offices are always open all the time,” said Lotulia.
He added that more security personnel led by Banisa OCS, Oscar Bungusu, were deployed at the border part to follow on some links in Silanga Mbili in Darkale area.
The injured were airlifted to Nairobi for specialized treatment.
