Pupils living with disability in Narok county have benefited from three fully equipped classrooms constructed at a cost of Sh 7.5 million by National Fund for the Disabled of Kenya (NFDK).
Speaking while commissioning the classrooms at Masikonde Primary School in Narok North Sub County Wednesday, NFDK Chairperson Ms. Kristina Kenyatta said the building is part of 99 other projects the organization has put up.
Ms. Kenyatta added that a further Sh300, 000 grant had been allocated to support miscellaneous running operations at the institution.
The Chairperson called on parents and administration not to hide children with special needs reminding them that the law recognizes the rights of persons living with disabilities hence should be exposed to benefit from any available grants.
“We should stop the culture of hiding children with special needs because they too are talented in different ways and can learn skills just like any other child,” she said.
Ms. Kenyatta assured the residents that the new education curriculum has been developed to accommodate the physically challenged persons.
She challenged the children with special needs to pursue their studies to the university level promising that the Council would help them to realize their dreams.
The National Council of Persons Living with Disability Narok Representative Julius Ntaiya called for the integration of children with special needs in the society lamenting about some residents discriminating this segment.
“We should not discriminate persons living with disability because they are talented differently. The society should accommodate them and give them the support they need,” he said.
James Torome the Secretary Kenya Union of Special Needs Education Teachers (KUSNET) called on the Government to provide equal employment for qualified teachers for special education.
