Those opposed to the VC are anti-development

The  Masinde Muliro University’s Academic Staff Union’s, Prof. Sammy Kubasu has called for quick appointment of acting Vice Chancellor to preside over the forthcoming graduation ceremony.

Prof. Kubasu demanded that the appointment should be done before the next graduation so that the acting VC presides over the ceremony.

According to the unionist, the council of the university was resolute on not renewing the contract of the current  Vice Chancellor, Fredrick Otieno whose contract expires this month.

In view of the foregoing, the don said, the VC should not be allowed to preside over the graduation ceremony scheduled for December 13.

He said this would be injurious to the students as the certificates issued following the graduation may be annulled. “They can be declared null and void,” said the lecturer.

In September, the council was reported to have relied on State Corporation Advisory Committee’s evaluation government circular of November 23, 2010.

The circular outlines procedures for re-appointment of chief executive officers of universities and State corporations.

Prof. Otieno described those fronting for his removal as busy bodies opposed to his development agenda at the university.

The  VC has reportedly written to the University Council’s Chairman, Dr. Jeremy Bundi requesting to be given another five year contract, forcing the later to make its stance known to the Education Ministry about three months ago.
