Thika set For Construction of ICT Hub

Plans are underway to construct an Information, Communication and Technology (ICT), hub in Thika town, Kiambu County, bringing hope to hundreds of youth, aiming to take onto online jobs.

The Center that is set to be built at the Public Works grounds, will be equipped with computers, laptops and internet connectivity and will be able to accommodate between 300 and 500 people.

Public Works Principal Secretary (PS), Joel Arumonyang, while on an assessment tour of the premises accompanied by area Member of Parliament (MP), Alice Ng’ang’a, said the project is a partnership with the State Department for ICT and Parliament, to have the centers in every Constituency.

He said the ICT Ministry, will be instrumental in enabling internet connectivity and also training the youth on programmes, where they can access online jobs including Ajira.

Arumonyang said the government is on course in ensuring ICT hubs are constructed across the country and called on the youth, to embrace the opportunity.

He said the world has become a digital village and the government has invested heavily in vibrant internet connectivity across the country, to create opportunities for its citizens to earn a living.

PS added that besides the ICT hubs, they are going to all the counties to support the ongoing government projects, including construction of the affordable houses in every Constituency, and offer technical support.

Ms Ng’ang’a maintained that once the ICT project kicks off, the residents will help in its construction.

She divulged that the funds for the construction are available and the construction works will kick off soon.

Ng’ang’a at the same time called on the youth to embrace the hub, to get job opportunities, adding that several young people are making a living out of digital jobs.

“We shall equip the Centre with computers, internet connectivity, and guides to help our young people to access sites, which they can use to get job opportunities. Students should also ensure they are tech-savvy, to benefit from such government initiatives,” the MP said.
