Ten youths arrested in Narok town for demonstrating

Ten youths were arrested in Narok Town on Thursday for participating in un-lawful demonstrations and causing unrest in the busy town.

Narok County Police Commander Riko Ngare said the youths, mainly the matatu operators, boda boda riders and students took to the streets to protest against the 2024 Finance Bill.

“They barricaded the Narok- Bomet road and attempted to lit fire, but a contingent of police officers responded swiftly and repulsed them,” said Ngare.

The youths engaged police in running battles for the better part of the day before being contained by the police.

The police said no police officer was reported injured in the mayhem nor casualties from the members of the public reported.

The ten protestors arrested, he said, were booked at the Narok police station pending to be arraigned in court where they will be charged for participating in unlawful demonstrations.

Despite the unrest, the police boss said, many businesses did not shut down their premises.

Narok County Commissioner Kipkech Lotiatia had warned the residents against engaging in destructive demonstrations, and encouraged them to protest peacefully so as to be heard.

The commissioner had warned that those who will engage in violence would be arrested and face the full force of the law.

At the same time, the family that lost their son during the Tuesday demonstration is calling for justice saying their son had joined his colleagues to fight for their rights and was set to join university this year.
