Owing to incessant calls by athletes to the County Government of Bomet to provide modern training facilities, the County Executive-In-Charge (CEC) of Sports, Alice Kirui, has announced that Tegat grounds was ready for use.
Kirui who spoke, in Bomet, said the local athletes have for a long time, travelled to other counties, including Uasin Gishu, Nandi and Elgeyo Marakwet, for training.
She said the construction of Tegat grounds in Bomet East and in an area bordering Mau forest, started in 2018 and that the facility was now ready for commissioning.
The CEC said she expected the local athletes to fully utilize the facility in a bid to bring out various budding talents as well as enhancing seasoned ones.
Kirui at the same time refuted claims by some of the athletes, claiming that the Department of Sports did little in assisting them.
She said the athletes were complaining in the peripheries while none had gone to the County offices with a specific need or problem that needed to be solved.
“We, as the Department of Sports, are ready to address all the issues affecting the sports men and women,” she said.
“Some of the athletes who raise complaints do not have serious issues they want addressed. Some of them just want handouts which may not be the way the Government works,” CEC noted.
Kirui at the same time urged teachers to give support to students who had various talents in sports, saying it was at that tender age when such abilities were to be nurtured.
