Teenage pregnancy in Migori County may surge following increased cases of young people booking Migori hotels during the day.
Chairman Migori County Civil Society Organisation Forum Tobias Ogolla while speaking in Migori town on Wednesday warned that young people, between, 13-17 years are out for sex spree noting some parents have lost control over their children.
According to Ogolla, children take advantage of parents’ absence in their homes during the day and plan their meetings which happens in Migori town lodges.
He added that those engaging in teenage sex are also aware that police are more active during the night as they enforce the national curfew.
The Civil Society is now worried that if all relevant stake holders don’t intervene at this time, then we should prepare for early pregnancy cases and other related long term damaging effects which includes school dropouts.
Ogolla called on the police to closely monitor the operations of all lodges and hotels within the county and ensure they follow regulations which include restricting certain age from the lodges.
Such regulations, he said would control or minimise the spread of Corona Virus.
He said young people seen within Migori town have completely violated social distance rule to curb Corona Virus spread.
On his part, Migori County Commissioner Joseph Rotich asked parents to fully control the movement of their children at the time when the country is fighting international Corona Virus Pandemic which has threatened human life.
He said hotels and lodges have operation regulations among them prohibiting teenagers from engaging in premarital sex. Rotich warned that those permitting young children in lodges will face the law.
