A 17-year-old boy drowned at Kabuyuni beach in Msambweni sub county, Kwale county last Friday.
Police identified the deceased as Mohamed Juma who was swept by strong ocean currents while swimming near the shoreline.
County police commander Joseph Nthenge said friends who were swimming with Juma survived the ordeal and reported the matter to the police.
His friends and people who were leisurely walking on the beach tried to help but the water was too turbulent.
He said the incident happened late afternoon and that the victim’s body was later retrieved by rescue swimmers who mounted a search.
Nthenge said the body was first taken to Kwale county hospital mortuary before it being given to the family for burial in accordance to the Islamic faith.
Last week. Kwale County Commissioner Karuku Ngumo banned children from accessing local beaches after sunset citing the need to protect them from harm.
