Around 30 football teams have confirmed their participation in the inaugural Matubariat Football Tournament, set to take place in Bomet County.
Bildad Cheruiyot, a former Silibwet Township ward aspirant, sponsors the tournament.
The teams are drawn from four sub-locations: Chepngaina, Kapsimotwo, Silibwet, and Motigo. Cheruiyot announced that the tournament will officially kick off on November 16 at various playgrounds within the ward.
“We are currently registering teams to ensure that no one is left out of this exciting competition,” Cheruiyot said.
Speaking with Kenya News Agency in Bomet town, Cheruiyot revealed that the tournament will run for one month and two weeks, coinciding with the long holiday season.
He emphasized that the initiative aims to unite young people and promote healthy, productive activities during the break.
“The goal is to encourage youth to tap into their talents, divert their attention from negative behaviors such as drug abuse and sexual misconduct, and engage in positive community-building activities,” Cheruiyot explained.
Cheruiyot also highlighted that sports could serve as a platform for local youths from diverse ethnic backgrounds to interact, share cultural experiences, and build tolerance towards one another.
“Development initiatives like this are vital in fostering unity among the youth. These tournaments not only give young people a chance to showcase their talents but also offer an alternative to idleness. By engaging in such activities, they can contribute positively to the local economy and society,” he said.
The tournament sponsor urged participants to take the competition seriously, as it presents an opportunity to demonstrate their skills.
“Unfortunately, many talented youths fall victim to the dangers of drugs and poverty, which often lead to destructive behaviours. Sports can help combat these issues by promoting positive behavior, reducing violence, and providing a safe outlet for young people,” Cheruiyot added.
Cheruiyot reiterated his commitment to nurturing youth talent, explaining that his broader vision is to position the region as a hub for sports talent that can inspire future generations.
“I aim to help develop athletes who will not only excel in sports but also serve as role models for the youth in our region,” he said.
Winners from the sub-location and ward levels will be awarded cash prizes, trophies, playing kits, and footballs.
