The Kenya National Union of Teachers Secretary General, Bomet Chapter, Desmond Langat and other Union officials held a round table meeting on Tuesday with the Speaker of County Assembly, Cosmas Korir and Education Committee members to find solutions to issues facing early childhood development education (ECDE) teachers in the county.
Among issues raised by the teachers were non-payment of salaries, with some teachers going without salary for over seven months.
Langat said the deliberations at the meeting were positive and that the County Assembly members have promised to address the issues that have led to protests, including strikes and demonstrations.
“We have had serious engagement with the County Assembly and we look forward to extending the same to the County Executive to ensure that the problems that have faced the ECDE teachers are resolved once and for all,” he said.
“We are supposed to follow the guidelines given out by the Salaries and Renumeration Commission, but here in Bomet, they are doing their own thing,” Lang’at lamented.
This comes at a time when the teachers have, for long, staged peaceful demonstrations while seeking to have the county government address their grievances.
