The national government is currently engaged in discussions with the county government of Kisii and the Kisii County Healthcare Union to restore normalcy at Nduru Level 4 Hospital in South Mogirango Constituency.
The hospital was recently closed after workers downed their tools following an attack by rowdy mob on April 12, 2023, as they were trying to transfer unused medical equipment to other healthcare facilities facing shortages in the county.
In response, the health care workers’ unions advised their members to withdraw their services until the government guaranteed their safety.
Addressing a public baraza in the area, County Commissioner Tom Anjere urged the residents to use dialogue and their leaders to voice their concerns, rather than resorting to violent means.
Anjere assured healthcare practitioners that necessary security measures, such increasing the number of police officers to the facility, would be taken to ensure their safety as operations resume at the hospital.
Dr. Matiko Giabe, the Acting County Director of Medical Services, stated during a press briefing that some practitioners had expressed their desire to transfer from the facility due to the recent unfortunate incident.
“Much has been tried at the departmental level to ensure they continue working, but the current circumstance has been difficult to convince them,” Matiko stated.
Furthermore, Matiko commended the security agencies for their prompt response in rescuing the healthcare practitioners from the angry mob.
