A man who was found breaking into a shop at Matungu shopping centre, Matungu Sub-county, Kakamega County has been shot dead by police.
Two other suspects who were in the company of the man escaped.
The Matungu Sub-County Deputy County Commissioner (DCC), Jacob Awuor confirmed the incident, saying that at around 3am on Thursday, police who were on patrol at the centre responded to a distress call from one shop owner.
He said they responded and waylaid three men who had dug a hole on the wall of the shop and were ready to move in and steal.
The DCC said the three men defied orders to stop and took off following which police opened fire and shot one dead. A chisel, a torch and an axe were recovered from the man.
The body was moved to Bungoma hospital mortuary.
