A middle-aged man stunned an Eldoret court when he pleaded guilty to raping an 82 year old grandmother a week ago in Kaptagat.
A composed Moses Koech confidently pleaded guilty to the rape charges when he appeared before Senior Principal Magistrate Harrison Barasa.
He however claimed he was not in his senses when he committed the offence while under the influence of alcohol.
The accused allegedly committed the offence against the woman said to be mentally unstable on May 7, at Kaptagat area in Ainabkoi constituency, Uasin Gishu County.
The packed court was left in disbelief when the accused said he raped the octogenarian on the material day, “I was however not in my right frame of mind since I was drunk when I messed,” he claimed.
The granny is receiving treatment at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital, MTRH where she was rushed to by family members following the rape ordeal.
The victim was walking home when she was ambushed by the suspect who choked her in to prevent her from screaming for help.
Passerby’s managed to apprehend the suspect as he attempted to flee the scene after committing the heinous crime. They subjected him to mob justice before handing him over to the police.
The Prosecution has lined up seven key witnesses who are expected to testify against the suspect in the court.
Barasa directed that the suspect be remanded in police custody for seven days pending his sentencing in connection with the rape. The case will be mentioned on May 20.
