Properties of unknown value were destroyed after fire gutted down a supermarket within Oyugis Town, Homa Bay county in the wee hours of the night.
The fire which lasted between 1.00AM and 4.00 AM reduced to ashes food items, electrical appliances and several non-food items at Jaribu supermarket situated next to Nyamira bus booking office.
Oyugis Township Chief Nelson Muma who confirmed the incident said that a huge smoke was seen emanating from inside the supermarket before fire engulfed the entire building hosting the premises.
Muma said members of the public assisted by officers from Oyugis police station tried desperately to put off the inferno before a fire engine from Kisii county arrived at the scene but nothing was salvaged.
The administrator said that the cause of the fire which lasted for about three hours has not been established and expressed concern on the frequent fire incidents in Oyugis Town that leaves traders counting huge losses.
He called on the county government to station a firefighting engine in Oyugis town for emergency response during fire outbreaks.
