At least thirty-one students from Oldonyonyokie Girls’ Secondary school in Kajiado West, were on Monday evening injured after strong winds blew off three classroom roofs.
The students who were in class during the incident suffered head cuts from flying iron sheets that were torn off from the roof by the whirlwind.
Others suffered broken limbs and bruises during the melee as they scampered for safety.
The school’s Principal Grace Kimani confirmed that those injured were mostly form 3 and 4 students including one teacher and they were all rushed to Magadi Health Centre for treatment.
Seven students were admitted at the facility and one later transferred to Kenyatta National hospital Tuesday morning for specialized treatment after suffering serious injuries.
“Among the injured students, 24 were treated and discharged while 7 others were still admitted in hospital with serious cut wounds and two others with broken limbs. The teacher also received treatment and was discharged.” she said.
Kajiado county TSC director Solomon Leseewa said the situation was now under control and learning had resumed in the school.
Leseewa added that the school board was currently meeting to assess the damage caused.
Strong winds are common in the area as it is surrounded by many hills. The incident at the school was not the first with a similar incident having been witnessed in 2019 and 2020.
The school’s administration has appealed for help in the construction of strong roofs to sustain the strong winds which are a common occurrence in the area.
