Students get tips on careers course choices

Students from Nyahururu got a rare opportunity on career guidance sessions when tutors from Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) offered a free session at PCEA Nyahururu Church.

Angeline Wahu one of the session facilitators from KUCCPS, and Augustine Ngingi from St. Paul’s University said the tips were meant to equip the students with essential knowledge on making informed decisions about their higher education choices.

Wahu emphasized the importance of career alignment when selecting courses, cautioning them, “It is crucial for students to choose courses that match their interests and strengths. Selecting a course purely based on its popularity or peer influence may lead to dissatisfaction in the future,” she said.

Ngigi on the other hand, advised the students to consider marketability and future job prospects when selecting a career path.

“A good course is not just about passion but also about opportunities. Students should research the demand for various professions and align their choices with both personal goals and industry needs,” she advised.

Moreover, she guided students through the KUCCPS portal, explaining the application process and common pitfalls to avoid.

The students, who are preparing to transition to higher learning institutions, expressed their appreciation for the session, stating that it gave them clarity on how to make informed academic choices.

“I had many questions about how to select a course, but after this session, I now understand what factors to consider before making a final decision,” said Alice Wanjiru.

Another student, James Njoroge, added, “I now know how to navigate the KUCCPS portal and select courses wisely. This session has been very helpful.”

As the KUCCPS placement deadline approaches, students were encouraged to utilize available resources and seek guidance to maximize their opportunities for suitable career choices and placements in various colleges.
