A 17 year old student is fighting for his life at Homa Bay County Teaching and Referral Hospital after he was allegedly beaten and seriously injured by police officers at Kamata trading centre, Kakaeta Sub-Location in Ndhiwa Sub County.
Almada Onyango, a form four student at St. Peter’s Rambusi Secondary School is said to have been left unconscious by two administration police officers attached to Kamata police post who descended on him with batons.
It was not immediately clear what promoted the assault on the boy who was riding on a motorbike at the time of the attack.
The student was rushed to Homa Bay County Teaching and Referral Hospital in a critical condition where he is receiving treatment but still in a coma.
The boy’s mother, Leah Ogweno Okong’o said that the officers attacked her son, stripped him naked and started beating him after arresting him while riding on a motorbike heading to Kamata.
Speaking to KNA in the Hospital, the mother narrated that she was notified by her daughter who found the officers beating her brother and when she rushed to the scene
one of the officers threatened to shoot her dead which prompted her to raise an alarm before members of the public rescued the boy.
She said her son was first taken to Ogongo Health Center in a critical condition and was later transferred to the County Referral Hospital where he is currently admitted.
The Hospitals acting Officer in Charge, Meshack Liru said the boy suffered soft tissue and nerve injuries on various parts of the body.
When contacted, Ndhiwa Sub County Police Commander, Evans Ombui confirmed the incident, saying investigations had been launched. “The officers concerned have recorded statements and the matter is now being handled in the County Police Headquarters,” he said.
