A 16 year old student who lost her leg as a result of a road accident is appealing to well-wishers to help acquire an artificial leg so that she can attend school.
Audrey Atieno Ochieng, a form two student at Siranga Mixed Secondary School in Ugenya Sub County, Siaya said her mobility has been inhibited by the accident that saw one of her legs amputated.
Speaking to the KNA in Siaya, the young girl who was accompanied by her mother said her family was too poor to afford the over Sh. 100,000 required for the artificial leg and other medical expenses hence her appeal.
She said that her predicament began on December 14 last year when she boarded a motorcycle from Ugunja, where she had gone to visit her aunt, for her home in Manga “B” village in Yenga sub location when a motor vehicle hit them from behind along the Ugunja – Ukwala road.
“The motorcyclist was entering a petrol station at Kayombi market when the vehicle hit us from behind. My leg was completely fractured,” she lamented.
Her mother, Benta Adhiambo Ochieng said her daughter was rushed to Siaya county referral hospital and later Bama hospital where the leg was amputated four days later.
Mrs. Ochieng said that the girl spent the better part of early this year in the wards and only returned back to class for a few weeks before the schools were closed due to the Coronavirus pandemic.
“We are peasant farmers who live from hand to mouth and I will appreciate if well-wishers can come to the aid of Audrey,” she said, adding that their economic status made them take the daughter to a day school instead of Moi Girls, Nangili where she had been admitted to.
Mrs. Ochieng said that Audrey needs the artificial leg to aid her movement to school, given that she commutes daily to the school which is several kilometres away from their home.
Any assistance can be channeled to Audrey’s mother Benta Adhiambo Ochieng on telephone number 0708630368.
